Cheshire Village set to go carbon neutral

20 July 2009

A village in Cheshire is trying to become the first 'zero carbon' community in England.

In Aston Hayes, schools, businesses and people are helping reduce the amount of electricity they use by having solar powered water heating, wind turbines to generate electricity and doing other simple things like turning off the lights or the television when they're not being used.

They've helped lots of businesses and homes save money in electricity bills, and it's guessed that they've already reduced the amount of carbon dioxide they normally produce by a quarter.

Carbon neutral is a term that means that the amount of carbon dioxide you produce is balanced by either storing it or helping to reduce the amount produced somewhere else (like helping to plant trees that absorb carbon dioxide)
