Environmentally friendly chewing gum

Chewing gum

Scientists in Wales have come up with a chewing gum that can be easily removed from our pavements or clothes.

Normal chewing gum has a surface which repels water, making it really sticky and hard to remove from surfaces. The new gum is water soluble and lets water to form a layer around it, making it really easy to scrape off and clean up using just soap and water.

At the moment, the UK spends £150 million every year cleaning chewing gum from our streets.

The new gum was developed by chemists three years ago, but they have spent that time making it taste and feel as good as normal chewing gum.

It has gone on sale in America, and they hope that it will soon be on sale in the UK.

Did you know?

Chewing gum is banned in Singapore, and you can be jailed for up to a year if you try and smuggle it into the country!
