Wheelchair that moves by thought alone

30 April 2009

It may sound like something from the X-Men films, but scientists in Spain have actually come up with an amazing wheelchair that is controlled by the power of the mind alone.

Using a laser scanner, a screen shows dots of a virtual image of their surroundings and when the dots move where the user wants to go, their brainwaves change a bit and a brain scanner (EEG) sends a signal to a computer controlling the wheelchair.

Using the laser scanner, the wheelchair can even avoid obstacles in its path so it can be used in places that the person has never been.

However, it's not ready to be used in the Paralympics yet - it can only detect two thoughts per minute!
